Michelia champace 'Alba', Michelia alba -
This flowering tree
originated in China. The trees are prized in many Southeast Asian
countries like Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam. They are usually grown in
front of temples because of the fragrance. In Spring, Summer, and Fall,
the tree bears many flowers, almost one flower on each leaf node. The oil
of these flowers is used in making 'Joy', the world's most expensive
perfume. Large lush green leaves make this a pretty house plant, even when
not in bloom.
In their
native habitat, and in California, the tree can easily grow to 30 feet. In
pots, they start flowering at 2-feet, and can be pruned to any desired
height. It prefers morning sun, but can tolerate partial shade or
afternoon sun. Indoor, just a few hours of bright light is enough to keep
it growing.
This plant
does not like wet feet. Constantly-wet soil will cause its root to rot,
killing the plant. To avoid this, use an appropriate pot size, and be
careful not to over-water in winter.

A new variety of champaca,
recently introduced from China. This plant has bigger flowers, with sweet fragrance
similar to Michelia alba. The flowers are more like magnolia, with pure
snow-white petals.
