Bitter
Melon, Bitter Gourd, Balsam Pear, Ku Qua Foo, Foo Gwa-
Momordica charantia -
This melon has a bitter taste, which is believed to have multiple
medicinal properties (appetite stimulant, gastro infection treatment, ...).
Good for stir-fried, stuffed, or in soup. A good source of potassium
(twice that of bananas).
The tender perrenial vine has bright green lobed leaves and yellow
self-pollinated flowers that are fragrant in the morning. The fruit is
about the size of a cucumber, with a prominently warty skin.
Prefers full sun, but tolerates some light shade. Needs fertile,
well-drained, moist soil. Start seeds early indoor 5 weeks before
frost-free date. Pick fruits when still green (the younger, the less
bitter). Reduce bitterness by rubbing the flesh with salt and rinse
thoroughly or by blanching in boilling water for 2 to 3 minutes. |
