Ceylon
Spinach, Vine Spinach, Saan Choy -
Basella rubra var. rubra -
This tropical spinach is highly nutritious, easy to
grow, and decorative. Does not bolt even under extreme July heat. The vine
has bright purple color with green succulent leaves. Well-fertilized vines
produce palm-sized leaves throughout summer for use in salad, soup,
or steamed.
Prefers full sun or light shade. Needs fertile, well-drained soil. Start
seeds 6 weeks before frost-free date, or sow directly in soil after.
First harvest can be done by cutting the plant to 1-2 inches above ground
when reaching 10-12 inches, new branches will grow for second harvest.
Alternatively, let the vine climbs up a trellis or fence all summer, pick
young leaves and tips when needed.
